Vacumming Woman, projection installation, 1992

This projection installation is comprised of two slide projectors, and a programmable dissolve system. It has also been exhibited as a video. With the generous support of my friend Joy Hemphill, who was the model, several images were taken with a still camera of her making vacuuming gestures. These images were later edited into a projection sequence, and painstakingly aligned to create the appearance of smooth animation. Using only 14 images, the ghostly image of the woman vacuums over and over again as the process replays. At times she vacuums very slowly and other times she moves very quickly as though trying to remove a tough spot.
This work was first installed at Emily Carr College of Art in Vancouver (above). It has since also been shown in Halifax at the Anna Leonowens Gallery, and in Chicago at Gallery 2 (below). Left, a frame is featured on the cover of Rewire magazine.
