paper sketch
The idea for Habitat came from a childhood memory of swallows dancing in the sky above old boat barns along the Fraser river. Preliminary drawings of swallows in flight developed into 3D paper models for the design competition. Once the project was accepted, detailed vector renderings were made. These full-sized drawings were then used to cut the 1/2-inch steel plate using digitally-driven cutting technology. The steel was then rolled, welded, filed, sandblasted, and painted.
The signage was designed in consultation with Kris Bauder of the Richmond Nature Park, Rod Janes from the City of Richmond, and journalist, Derrick Penner.
